Gilroy Mustangs

Two Mustangs made their wrestling debut this past weekend and they picked up first place finishes in the process.
Nick Aguilar, 106, and Alex Felix, 138, both took home first place finishes at the tough Clovis West Shootout tournament Dec. 13 in Clovis. Eight Gilroy wrestlers placed at the tournament in addition to Christopher senior Alex Garcia taking second place for the Cougars.
Aguilar topped Clovis High’s Wyatt Cornelison with a 6-5 decision for his inaugural win in a Mustangs uniform. Felix, who was wrestling for the B team, topped Aaron Mora of Clovis West for a 2-1 decision in his finals match.
Christopher’s senior standout Alex Garcia finished second in 170-pound action. Garcia took Clovis High’s Dominic Kincaid to a tiebreaker, but was bested 2-1.
Gilroy’s Mark Penyascek also took second after losing a 7-3 decision to Adam Prentice from Clovis in the finals. His twin brother, Matt Penyascek, finished third at 182, beating Servite High’s Michael Vasquez with a 5-1 decision.
Gavin Melendez, wrestling at 120, also took third for Gilroy. Melendez won by fall at 5:59 over Keith Ho from Millis High in his final match. Jesse Vasquez took fourth in his 132 match-up with Jacob Wright from Dinuba. Wright took the tiebreaker from the Gilroy wrestler with a 2-1 final.
Joseph Delgado, who was also making his wrestling debut, took fifth after winning by fall at 4:00 over Del Oro’s Evan Minturn. Tony Andrade, another Gilroy freshman, also took fifth after beating Victor Valley’s Austin Fifer by fall at 2:00.
