Prep Roundup: Dec. 8

After dropping its first game of the Aptos Tournament, Christopher rebounded with two big wins to close it out. 
The Cougars finished the tournament with a 48-32 win over Soquel Saturday. They also cruised past Harbor 75-45 on Friday.
Stats from these games were not available. 
Christopher opened the tournament with a 68-47 loss to Saint Mary’s-Stockton on Thursday. 
The Cougars trailed by just nine points, 40-31, at the half to Saint Mary’s. They hung right with them in the third half, but were outscored 15-11. The Rams shut the door on Christopher in the final frame by holding it to just five points while scoring 13 of their own. 
Christopher (2-1) will host Gunderson at 7 p.m. Wednesday before playing in the Bob Hagen Tournament at Gilroy Thursday through Saturday. 
Mustangs drop three straight at Aptos Tournament
Gilroy met Harbor for the third time in a week, but the result was the same. 
The Pirates topped the Mustangs 61-49 in the final game of the Aptos Tournament Saturday at the Santa Cruz Warriors Stadium. 
Michael Kropff led the team with 21 points, followed by Bishop Hays with eight and Connor Doyle with six. 
The Mustangs also fell to Soquel in Game 2 of the tournament Friday. Gilroy took a 30-23 lead into halftime of that contest, but turnovers proved costly in the second half. 
Stats from this game as well as the tournament opener—a 74-29 loss to Aptos—were not yet available. 
Gilroy (0-4) will be back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Monterey and will host the Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament which kicks off Thursday and runs through Saturday. The Mustangs will open with a 6:30 p.m. game against Trinity Christian Thursday. 
GIRLS SOCCER
Christopher blanks Mills
The Christopher girls soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 win over Mills Saturday at the Burlingame Tournament. 
Jaime Boutee drew first blood for the Cougars, scoring off an assist from Natalie Filippi. Filippi had a chance of her own later in the half, but hit the crossbar on a header. 
Gio Munoz put the nail in Mills’ coffin, scoring off a full volley on a pass from Zidant Okere. 
Christopher (1-0) will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. today to host North Salinas in its home opener. 
GIRLS SOCCER
Mustangs fall to Santa Cruz, Harbor at Watsonville Tournament
Santa Cruz’s Sophia Murphy scored in the eighth minute against Gilroy, but that early goal was all her team would need to win. 
Gilroy fell 1-0 to Santa Cruz in its final game of the Watsonville Tournament Saturday in Watsonville. The Mustangs also lost to Harbor 6-2 on Thursday in the second round of the tournament.
Brittany Bishop, Gilroy’s JV goalie, got the nod to start in net for varsity as normal starter Victoria Rodriguez was unavailable. Nerves seemed to get the best of the young goalie, allowing Santa Cruz to score on its first shot, but was solid the remainder of the game.
Chelsey Robles and Alexi Slattery had scoring opportunities in the game, but was unable to break the Santa Cruz defense. 
Gilroy had just one sub, but saw excellent defensive protection from Samantha Gonzalez, Angela Leonardo, Jessica Koppel and Monica Ruelas despite being shorthanded. 
The Mustangs scored first in their loss to Harbor when Robles put the bread in the basket on a breakaway goal assisted by Agust Gomez. The Pirates answered with three goals in a 10 minute span to take a 3-1 lead. 
Gilroy got within one when Slattery dribbled through three defenders and past a diving goalie to score in the 18th minute to make the score 3-2. 
The Pirates added three goals in the last 10 minutes for the final.
The Mustangs (0-3) will be back in action at 5:45 p.m. today to host Greenfield for their home opener. 
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Cougars go 0-3 at Lynbrook Tournament
Christopher opened its season by going 0-3 at the Lynbrook Tournament, but it certainly put up a fight. 
The Cougars biggest lost of the tournament was by just eight points in their final game of the tournament, a 55-43 final to Cupertino on Saturday. Christopher lost by just four points the day before to Lynbrook, 51-47, and by six to Castilleja School in the opener on Thursday, falling 51-45. 
Teresa Guerra led Christopher with 11 points against Cupertino, two of which were 3-point baskets. Christa Arroyo posted eight points in that game, while Ally Foster had seven—including going 3 for 3 from the line. 
Guerra led the charge against Lynbrook, too. She posted 22 points, including hitting six 3-pointers for the Cougars. Foster also reached double digits, scoring 11 points for Christopher. 
Stats from the tournament opener were not available. 
Christopher (0-3) will be back on the court at 7 p.m. Tuesday to host Los Gatos. 
BOYS SOCCER
Christopher drops opener to Valley Christian
Christopher and Valley Christian took turns exchanging goals in the second half of Friday’s game, but the Warriors were able to squeeze one more past the hosts. 
The Cougars lost their season opener 5-4 Friday at home. The two teams were locked in a 1-1 tie at halftime. 
Stats from this game were not yet available. 
Christopher (0-1) will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to host Gunderson. 
Mustangs fall to Los Gatos in Oak Grove Cup opener
Gilroy dropped the Oak Cup Cup opener 2-1 to Los Gatos at Oak Grove Saturday. 
The Mustangs entered the game with exactly 11 players—leaving them with zero substitutes for the game. Despite being shorthanded Gilroy held Los Gatos to a scoreless tie at the half.
Los Gatos struck in the first minute after halftime following a miscue by Gilroy at midfield. The Wildcats scored again moments later, despite freshman goalie Jaime Ulloa making two great saves. Unfortunately for Gilroy, the keeper couldn’t keep his hands on the ball and Los Gatos was able to tap it in for the score. 
The Mustangs were not about to let the Wildcats shut them out, however, and senior Sean Kaufman made sure of that. Kaufman cut the Wildcats’ lead in half when he headed in David Beckham’s cross inside the 18-yard-line for the score. 
Gilroy kept the pressure on, but was unable to knock another one past the Los Gatos defense. 
The Mustangs also lost its season opener 4-0 to Soledad at home Wednesday. 
Gilroy (0-2) will be back in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Harbor at home for the second round of the Oak Grove Gold Cup.
