A slow start and a late goal contributed to the Gilroy High field hockey team tying Los Altos 1-1 in the teams’ Mount Hamilton Division opener Wednesday in Los Altos.

“It took us about 40 minutes to get going,” GHS head coach Adam Gemar said. “We looked really good in the second half but it took us a while to start. I’m not sure what the problem is, but we will fix the slow starts.”

Ezzie Gobea fed a crossing pass to Ashlee Williams whose one-touch shot made it 1-0 Gilroy. However, Los Altos countered with about six minutes to play in regulation, capitalizing on a short-corner opportunity to send it to overtime.

In the seven-versus-seven, seven-minute sudden death session, neither team managed to break the deadlock.

“I’m not disappointed in the effort, just the lack of fire to get going,” Gemar added.
