Oakwood Hawks

Palma built up too big of a lead at halftime for the Christopher boys basketball team to rebound from.
The Cougars scored in double-digits only once, in the fourth quarter, in Friday’s 51-31 loss to Palma on the road.
The hosts led Christopher 26-13 at the half and further improved their lead by outscoring them 14-6 in the third. Christopher posted 12 points in the final frame, but it wouldn’t be enough to lift the team to victory.
Xander Bowers led the Cougars with eight points. Miika Smith posted six, while Zach Fishler scored five. Fishler and Josh Wheat each had a 3-point basket.
Palma’s Mason Miguel led all scorers with 12 points. Peter Lucas added nine.
Christopher will look to rebound during its 7 p.m. contest Wednesday against Monterey at home.

Oakwood tops SF Christian

Oakwood’s full-court trap proved too much for the visiting San Francisco Christian on Friday night.

The Hawks improved to 14-2 on the season with a 75-28 blanking of the Trojans at home. Oakwood built up an early 22-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and it was basically smooth sailing the rest of the way.

Oakwood was without the services of its 6-9 big man, Justin Mortensen, who suffered a severe hip strain and sprain after taking a hard fall off a dunk. He will miss the next weeks.

Freshman sensation Youssef Eshra led the team with 15 points, seven assists, six steals and four rebounds.  Zac Jenkins stepped up and posted 14 points and eight rebounds — while playing only one half.

Jonathan Angulo had 10 points, four rebounds and four steals. Miles Batey added 12 points, six rebounds and two assists. Ben Millward had eight points, three rebounds and three steals, while Evan Richards posted six points and four rebounds. Nate Schilling had seven points, three rebounds and two assists.

Oakwood will host York at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

CHS tops Watsonville

The Christopher girls soccer team got back to its winning ways, shutting out Watsonville 2-0 at home Friday.

Vanessa Koontz scored both goals for the Cougars, the first coming just three minutes before the end of the first half. Jamie Boutee assisted on the second goal which was netted halfway through the second. Koontz has 11 goals on the year.

The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Cougars and improves them to a 10-2 overall record and 2-2 in league play.

Christopher will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, taking on Salinas at home.

Gilroy falls to Salinas

The Gilroy girls soccer team had to dig itself out of a 2-0 hole heading into the second half of Friday’s contest at Salinas.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they were only able to erase one of those goals, losing their second straight game 2-1.

Stats from this game were not yet available.

The Mustangs goal came in the 62nd minute.

After three straight road games, Gilroy will return home to host Pajaro Valley at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.
