Pairing and seeding for the Central Coast Section field hockey playoffs have been announced.
Christopher learned Monday that it received the No. 12 seed (11-2-1) and will play at Monte Vista at 6 p.m. Thursday in Cupertino.
If the Cougars can escape the No. 5 seeded MV (12-2-1), they will face their neighbors from across town, Gilroy.
The Mustangs (13-2-1) received the No. 3 seed, automatically giving them a first round bye.
Gilroy will play the winner of the Christopher-MV game in the quarterfinals Saturday at Leland High School. The time of this contest is still to be determined.
BOYS WATER POLO
Mustangs take fifth in league
The Gilroy boys water polo team never stopped fighting.
The Mustangs edged out San Lorenzo Valley for fifth place in the Monterey Bay Pacific League with an 11-10 win Thursday in San Lorenzo Valley.
With 0:24 left on the clock, Gilroy recovered the ball after a shot on goal. Junior Brendan Reimer was fouled at 0:12 mark on an exclusion penalty against SLV which gave the Mustangs a 6-on-5 opportunity to score.
With time winding down Reimer fired the game winning goal in the top right corner of the net — his third of the game.
Sam Mandel had four goals for Gilroy while seniors Joe Vanni, Austin Lauber, and sophomores John Campozano and Minh Nguyen each added one.
Goalie Richie Bermea had 12 blocks and kept the Mustangs in the game with tremendous defense.
“This win was truly a team effort and the most exciting game I’ve ever been a part of,” Mustangs coach Fred Latimore said. “Everybody contributed —from Richie in the goal to Brendan’s game winning shot at the end. I asked them to leave it all out in the pool today and they did. I’m so proud of this team and the growth they have shown this year. The future is very bright for GHS Water Polo”.
