Christopher and Westmont opened the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs with an all-out battle.Â
The Cougars and Warriors needed five games to decide a winner, but ultimately Westmont won 3-2 to advance to the next round where it will face Archbishop Mitty.Â
But the Cougars didn’t go down without a fight.Â
After dropping the first game, 18-25, Christopher won the next two straight 25-23, 25-21. Westmont took Game 4 by a score of 25-13 and won the final set 15-9.Â
“The girls had a season of ups and downs but we as a coaching staff felt they stepped up in the last few to play some of their best volleyball. Westmont was good with ball control and really put pressure on us to not make unforced errors,” Cougar coach Brian Calimpong said. “Although we may have come up a little short on the scoreboard, they fought hard and we couldn’t be prouder. We have to qualify in the toughest division in CCS and that in itself is a monumental achievement. As we bid our five seniors fairwell, I’m excited with the direction the program is heading.”
Olivia Tabron led the offense with 14 kills, followed by Khaya Price with nine. Katelyn Viray added seven kills for the Cougars. Viray also served 100 percent and had an ace in the game.Â
Audrey Zitnay boasted the offense, serving up four aces in the game.Â
Ally Foster put up a stellar defensive effort with five blocks in the game. Marielle Gomez led in digs with 41, followed by Christa Arroyo with 20 and Viray with 18. Arroyo also had 34 assists in the game.Â
Christopher ends its season with a 16-16 overall record.Â
