Gilroy, meet your newest Monterey Bay League Pacific Division champions.Â
The Christopher girls tennis team clinched the title with a 4-3 win over Monterey Wednesday at home.Â
The Toredores made Christopher work for the title, tying the match at 3-3 and leaving the No. 3 doubles team to determine its fate.Â
The No. 3 doubles team won its first set 6-3, but dropped the second 4-6 to send the match to a tiebreaker. Luckily for the Cougars, the girls pulled out a 10-6 win to clinch the title.Â
“I’m very proud of our players,” Cougar coach Patrick McBrearty said. “This is a very special award!”
Christopher also played Alisal on Thursday in the division playoff, but fell short at 5-2 after losing two tiebreaker matches.Â
Jade Bardrick earned the No. 3 seed for the Central Coast Section tournament and Adena Chen and Liz Levan are paired up as the No. 3 doubles team. All will compete at North Salinas today.Â
Christopher was also honored with the Elgie Bellizio MBL Sportsmanship Award at the coaches meeting on Nov. 2.Â
GIRLS WATER POLO
Cougars best Alvarez
Senior Natalie Garcia helped her team end the regular season with a bang.Â
Garcia scored four times for the Cougars in their 13-5 win over Everett Alvarez Thursday on the road.Â
Christopher jumped out to a dominate 7-2 lead at the half to create a hole that the Eagles just couldn’t overcome.Â
Sierra Cellabos added three goals, two assists and a steal for the Cougars in the game. Hannah Marquez and Paige Gallardo each scored two goals while Megan Velho and Ashley Irby had a goal a piece. Irby also led the team in assists with three.Â
Netminder Nicole Andresen made 14 stops in the game for Christopher.Â
The Cougars (12-9 overall, 7-4 in league) will take on Gilroy in the opening round of the Monterey Bay League tournament at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Aptos High.Â
Gilroy falls to Monterey
The Mustangs ended their regular season with a 14-4 loss to Monterey at home Thursday.Â
The Toredores outscored Gilroy 10-2 at the half which proved too much for the Mustangs to overcome.Â

BOYS WATER POLO
Christopher routs Eagles
The Cougars ended their season on a high note, beating Everett Alvarez 11-3 Thursday at home.Â
Zach Gallardo, who is recovering from an injury, led the team with four goals. He also had two steals and an assist. Seniors Gordy Papalias and Zac Syth added two goals as did Max Deliz. Jesse Calderon rounded out scoring with a goal on three attempts.Â
Christopher displayed a great defensive effort, racking up 15 steals in the game. It had 11 different shooters taking 33 shots and coach Paul Wells said accuracy will be their focus heading into the Monterey Bay League Tournament.Â
The Cougars (7-9 overall, 7-5 in league) will take on the Eagles in the first round of the tournament at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Aptos High. Should they win, they will play the No. 1 seeded Stevenson Thursday — time and location are to be determined.Â
FIELD HOCKEY
Gilroy tops Prospect
Gilroy and Prospect were locked in a 1-1 tie at halftime Thursday, but that’s as close as the Mustangs would let their opponents get.
Katrina Carter, Tayler Silacci and Maddie Cox all scored for Gilroy, helping it to a 3-1 win at Prospect.Â
Prospect was able to tie the game despite being held to only two shots in the first half. The Gilroy defense didn’t give the hosts another chance, holding them to zero shots on goal after the break.Â
“We were able to pick up our passing, vision and overall level of play (in the second half,” Mustangs coach Adam Gemar said.Â
Gilroy (17-2-3 overall, 9-2-1 in league) will play its final two games of the regular season at home, starting with St. Ignatius at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. It will host Presentation at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.Â
The Mustangs currently sit in third place in league with 28 points and are nipping at the heels of second place St. Francis (31 points) and first place Archbishop Mitty (33 points). Seedings for the Central Coast Section tournament will be released on Nov. 10.
Christopher handed first home loss
The Christopher field hockey team was handed its first loss at home, falling 2-0 to North Salinas at home Thursday.
The Cougars (10-4-1 overall, 9-2-1 in league) will play their home finale at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Notre Dame. They play their regular season finale at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at York and seedings for the Central Coast Section playoffs will be released on Nov. 10.Â
VOLLEYBALL
Cougars fall to MVC
Christopher lost in straight sets to Monte Vista Christian Thursday on the road.
The Cougars fell 14-25, 16-25, 18-25 to the Mustangs, giving them a 14-10 overall record and 5-6 record in league play so far this season.Â

Christopher also played in the Spikefest II tournament Saturday, though results were not available.Â
The Cougars will be back on the court at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at San Benito.
Alisal sweeps Gilroy
Alisal completed its season sweep of Gilroy with a 3-0 win Thursday in Salinas.
The Mustangs lost 19-25, 25-27, 22-25 in a hard fought battle between the two teams.Â

The JV squad also lost, but gave its Alisal a thrilling second set 12-25, 22-25.
Coach Elaine Price said Gilroy was “point for point with Alisal” in Set 2, noting the girls displayed true teamwork.Â
Both of the team’s regular setters were out for the match, but Crystal Carrillo and Celeste Islas stepped up and ran the offense.
