The Christopher girls tennis team was feeling the pressure before Thursday’s match against Notre Dame, but was able to quickly settle down and get down to business.Â
The Cougars dominated the singles matches, helping the team to a 5-2 win over the visitors in their final home match of the season.Â
No. 1 Emily Barham won 6-0, 6-2 while No. 2 Adena Chen won 6-2, 6-1. The No. 3 singles player Tiffany Roberts and No. 4 Liz Levan also won their matches by scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-2 respectively.Â
The No. 1 doubles team of Kaitlyn Lombardo and Jade Bardrick were stellar as usual, winning their match 6-2, 6-0.Â
Christopher (7-2) lost the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, but not by much. The No. 2 team of Renata Vasconcelos and Kelly Nantais lost by a close score of 5-7, 5-7. Claudia Espino and Sara Blawski, the No. 3 team, also had a close match by eventually fell 4-6, 4-6.Â
The Cougars will play their final match of the regular season at 4 p.m. at North Salinas High School.Â
MVC bests Gilroy
The Gilroy girls tennis team was able to pick up wins in its No. 1 and 2 doubles matches, but fell short elsewhere.
The Mustangs lost 5-2 at Monte Vista Christian Thursday, dropping them to 0-10 overall this season.
The No. 1 team of Caitlyn Filice-Hollar and Nicole Holder won their game 6-1, 7-5, while Mya Esquival and Victoria Rodriguez — the No. 2 team — won their match 6-1, 6-3.Â
The Mustangs will close out the regular season at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Pajaro Valley.Â
VOLLEYBALL
Gilroy was able to get some rallies going against Monte Vista Christian, but fell just short each time.

Sarah Weiby led the team with seven kills. Leilani Mah had five and Bailie Erickson and Jenna Clonts each added three of their own.Â

The JV squad also lost 7-25, 7-25 to their MVC counterparts.Â

Salinas sweeps Christopher

The Christopher girls volleyball team lost its second straight contest at Salinas Thursday.

Christopher will host Seaside at 6:30 p.m. tonight. The Cougars (11-13 overall, 4-6 overall) have just four games left in the regular season, including tonight’s contest.Â

Cougars win nailbitter against Carmel
Â
The Christopher field hockey team didn’t let nerves get to it despite trailing 2-1 late in the game. Instead, the Cougars were able to tie it up and then take the lead all in a span of three minutes.

Emma Morley made the game winning goal with less than two minutes on the clock to lift Christopher to a 3-2 victory on Friday at Carmel. The Cougars played a back and forth game, trailing to the hosts 1-0 before tying it and then falling behind again. Christopher was able to tie the game at 2-2 with less than five minutes remaining.

The win improves Christopher to a 9-1 league record and 10-3 overall on the season. They will play host to North Salinas at 3:30 p.m. today.

Christopher wins last league game, finishes 2-1 at Lincoln tournament

The Christopher boys water polo team finished league play just way they opened it, with a win.Â

The Cougars topped San Lorenzo Valley 11-7 Thursday at home. The win improved CHS to a 6-6 record in league.

Christopher was finally able to shake off the slow start that has plagued it all season, tying the game at 4-4 at the half after a tough defensive battle.Â

The Cougars outscored SLV 7-3 in the second half, led by Matthew Higgenbotham who had six goals. Higgenbotham scored 106 goals in the regular season.

Kevin Costa added two goals and three steals in the game, while Gordy Papalias added two more goals and displayed a strong 2-meter defense. Jesus Marin also scored a goal for CHS.

Christopher also played in the Lincoln Tournament Friday and Saturday, finishing with a 2-1 record. The Cougars topped Santa Clara 11-3 and Mt. Pleasant 17-4, but fell 7-2 to Evergreen of San Jose.

The Cougars JV team topped its SLV counterparts 16-7 on Thursday, led by Max Deliz who had a triple hat trick with nine goals in the game. Jordan Jacinto scored three goals while Jackson Jenkins and Jimmy Vanni added two goals a piece. Jenkins also had three steals in the game.Â

The JV team finishes its season at 7 p.m. Tuesday against York at Santa Catalina High School.Â

The varsity squad awaits word from the Monterey Bay League on its seeding as the team will play in a double-elimination tournament to determine who advances to the Central Coast Section tournament.Â
