Gilroy Mustangs

SALINAS—Gilroy’s Monica Ruelas continues to solidify her reputation as one the Monterey Bay League’s top female runners. The junior Mustang took home her second straight first place finish at Wednesday’s MBL-Pacific Center Meet No. 2 at Toro Park.
Ruelas completed the course in 20:40.85, 45 seconds ahead of the second place runner. Christopher’s Natalie Fillippi was right in the mix and notched third place, completing the course in 21:36.88.
On the boys side, Gilroy’s Braulio Campos took home the highest finish of the male area runners. He crossed the finish line in 18:00.02, which was good for sixth place. Christopher’s Alejandro Diaz trailed the Mustang by a mere 26 seconds to finish 10th and broke the Cougar varsity boys cross country record in the process.
Gilroy’s Jesus Sanchez, Eric Heiser, Richard Guevara and Ruben Perez finished 11th, 15th, 20th and 22nd, respectively. Christopher’s Austin Hudson finished 25th.
Karla Lozano, of Gilroy High, came in 13th in the female varsity race. Daisy Pineda from Christopher took 17th. Alda Olmos and Marissa Galvan, both Mustangs, closed out the Top 25 by taking 23rd and 24th, respectively.
The Gilroy boys team finished first overall with a 34 in the junior varsity race as Mustangs claimed the top three spots. Jonathan Viveros, Jose-Tony Barradas and David Vargas came in at one, two and three, respectively, and finished within 40 seconds of one another.
Christopher’s Alex Partida took 6th, while teammate Jacob Buchner was 10th. Gilroy’s Connor Doyle came in 9th place.
Gilroy will race in the Crystal Spring Invitational at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Both teams will compete at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the MBL Center Meet No. 3 at Pinto Lake in Watsonville.
GIRLS GOLF
Cougars bested by Balers
Christopher fell 366-286 to San Benito Tuesday at Gilroy Golf Course.
The Cougars entered the match at a disadvantage with only two golfers playing the match. Mia Navarro carded a 55, while Samantha Vogel scored a 68. The three vacant spots were automatically given scores of 81.
San Benito’s Kendall Mills was the match medalist with a 54. Christina Carvalho scored a 56 for the Balers, while Isabella Arreola notched a 57. Kami Brewer-Pozzi carded a 58 and Maggie Campo a 61. Carisa Powell rounded out scoring for the Balers with a 70.
Christopher will take on Gilroy at 3:30 p.m. today at Gavilan Golf Course.
