Gilroy Mustangs

GILROY—The Mustangs field hockey team notched its first win of the year and it did it in grand fashion.
Gilroy blanked Monterey 8-0 Tuesday at Christopher High behind a breakout performance from Carli Coyler. The junior recorded a hat trick against the Toreadors to lead her team to victory.
Gilroy also saw breakout performances from two of its rookies. First-year players Corrine Lombardo scored two goals for the Mustangs, while Cami Rogers scored one. Maddy Cox and Cathy Carbajal also had a goal apiece and Carbajal earned Player of the Game honors for her standout play, head coach Adam Gemar said.
Cougars tie with Willow Glen
Christopher and Willow Glen needed extra time to decide a winner in their Sept. 11 contest, but neither was able to gain the edge. The teams settled for a 3-3 tie following a sudden death overtime in San Jose.
Willow Glen jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Cougars clawed their way back. Stats from this game were not available.
Christopher squared off with North Salinas Wednesday, though results weren’t available by press time. The Cougars (2-1-1) will play at 3:30 p.m. today at Monterey.
