GILROY—Gilroy High head wrestling coach Greg Varela is the National Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year for Region 7.
Vareala and principal and assistant coach Marco Sanchez were also named the California State Coaches of the Year.
The Mustangs had two wrestlers, freshman Alex Felix and senior Matt Penyacsek, finish in the Top 5 at the California Interscholastic Federation State Championship, taking third and fifth, respectively. Gilroy also captured its 13th consecutive Central Coast Section title this season.
The NWCA is headquartered in Manheim, Pa. It has 10,000 members and educational programs which serve 230,000 students yearly.
