Mustang spikers battle top CCS teams.
GILROY – Junior Nick Mason gave the Gilroy High boys volleyball team a boost with his blocks in back-to-back matches against CCS Champ Mount Madonna and San Lorenzo Valley.

Despite dropping both matches, the Mustang spikers have found their middle man in Mason – who suffered a sprained ankle in the loss to San Lorenzo Valley.

“Those were two CCS ranked teams and we won a game from each one of them – which we felt really good about,” head coach Craig Martin said. “Now we’re regrouping and retooling with our line-up and the kids have to come back tonight and take care of business so we can re-establish ourselves.”

The Mustangs (2-2 overall) travel to Watsonville today for 6 p.m. road game.

In Tuesday’s four-game loss to Mount Madonna, the Mustangs were ahead in the first two games before falling 15-12 and 15-13. But Gilroy won the third game 15-11, but faltered in the fourth game, 15-8,

“We were right in there the first two games, but the CCS Champs that they re they came back and beat us,” Martin said. “But we regrouped and won the third game. Last year, Mt. Madonna only lost handful of individual games the entire season so we felt good about that.”

Senior outside hitters Jason Medenceles (team-high 13 kills) and Scott Martin (eight kills) led the offensive attack, while senior setters Matt Largo (14 assists) and Tucker Baksa (13 assists, nine digs) provided the key set-ups.

Mason – who sparked the Mustangs to their game-three win – finished with nine blocks.

“Mason started to take control in the middle with Josh Gravell,” Martin said.

In Thursday’s match against SLV, the Mustangs lost 15-10 in the first game, won 15-7 in the second, and then dropped the final two games, 15-4, 15-10.
