People have written concerning local public servants’ pensions and Social Security. After reading this, all I can say is “No comment.” Is this the real deal? Perhaps we are asking the wrong questions during election years.
Our Senate and Congress do not pay into Social Security and, of course, they do not collect from it. They have a special plan for themselves. When they retire, they continue to draw the same pay until they die. I believe it may increase from time to time for cost of living adjustments.
For example, Sen. Byrd and Congressman White and their wives may expect to draw $7,800,000. Younger dignitaries, who retire at an early age, will receive much more. Their cost is zero.
An average person would have to collect $1,000 per month in Social Security benefits for 68 years and one month to equal Sen. Bill Bradley’s benefits. Social Security needs only one small change: Put the Senate and Congress into it and watch how fast they fix it.
