Red Phone

Dear Red Phone,
Why have they install access ramps along 1st street in the middle of the blocks?
Dear reader,
We contacted Caltrans about the ADA ramps along First Street, and here’s what Caltrans District Four spokesman Bernie Walik had to say. More information can be found at dot.ca.gov/hq/bep/ada_program.htm.
Walik: In essence, we are required to construct ADA compliant curb ramps at all state highway intersections where there are currently no curb ramps in place. If we don’t allow people with disabilities to cross then by law we need to block the intersection from anyone to cross as this would be viewed as discrimination. Also, markings aren’t required for an intersection to be considered a crosswalk.
