Gilroy – The most valuable offensive player (Elena Ramirez) and the most valuable midfielder (Karlie Sandoval) shared honors as co-MVPs of the 2003 Gilroy High field hockey team.
The players on the team voted for the awards and the most valuable player race ended in a tie. Co-head coach Erin Gemar and her husband, Adam, usually break ties, but decided it wasn’t necessary in this case.
“We’ve never had co-MVPs before,” Erin Gemar said. “It just reflects what
a tight team we had skill-wise.”
Ramirez led the team with 21 goals and finished the year with 23 assists (44 pts). The senior was named to the All-CCS second team.
Sandoval, a junior, contributed nine goals from the midfield and also assisted on 23 scores (32 pts). She was named to the All-CCS first team.
“Elena had a great year and was a sure thing with all those goals she had,” Gemar said. “But if not for Karlie, she probably would’ve had half those. Even if Karlie didn’t score the goal or have the assist, she was usually the pass right before it.”
Ramirez and Sandoval were joined on the Mission Trail Athletic League’s first team by defender Jenelle Perez and the versatile Shanté Mancera. Erin Magill, Meg Perkins and Stephanie Glenn also garnered league honorable mention.
As far as the team awards go, Gemar said there wasn’t one player that didn’t get at least one vote for something.
“I think that shows the skill level and the dedication level of this group,” she said. “Every person on this team is so important.
“All the kids met our expectations of improving, and reaching some of the goals we didn’t reach the year before.”
