A 20-7 run to start its match against host Hartnell College, the Gavilan College women’s volleyball team closed the first half of Coast Conference South play with a 25-12, 25-22, 25-22 triumph Wednesday night in Salinas.

The victory came in response to the Rams’ (11-7 overall, 4-1 conference) initial conference loss to Cabrillo, the state’s No. 2-ranked team, last Friday.

Game management late in sets two and three allowed Gavilan to remain in control down the stretch to close out the match win.

A balanced offensive attack was led by Avry Walker and her eight kills, while Emily Tonascia, Melissa Avila, and Kayce Skocko each had seven kills.

Brittany Lewis put up a career-best 17 assists. Jackyn Lantis, Walker, Avila, and Skocko held Hartnell’s offense in check and were busy collecting a combined 60 digs on the night.

The Rams have the rest of the week off before traveling to face Monterey Peninsula College Oct. 19.
