JEERS: For the breakdown in communication that let a violent
rape case go unreported to the public for a month.
The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

JEERS: For the breakdown in communication that let a violent rape case go unreported to the public for a month. Something’s broken in the Gilroy Police Department when a vital communication – the reporting of such a serious crime to the public – slips through the cracks. The rape was committed at 1:47am in a central Gilroy alley, according to police. A stranger pinned a woman to the ground and raped her while repeating, “Bitch, you deserve this.” More than a month later, the public is advised of the crime. It’s a serious breech of public trust that needs to be addressed in departmental procedures.

CHEERS: For the generous Gilroyans who once again came through and filled the food baskets for the poor that rely on St. Joseph’s Family Center, 7950 Church St., and the Salvation Army, Fifth and Church streets for a Thanksgiving feast. Please keep up the holiday spirit and remember to pick a local cause and give this holiday season.

JEERS: For the rising cost of benefits for those elected to local offices. That motivation should be, if not wholly removed, substantially curtailed as a reason or a perk for serving on a city council, water district or school board. Though officials put in a great deal of time and effort, those positions are not advertised or expected to be

full-time jobs.

CHEERS: For the city’s plans to brighten up the downtown area with new lighting placed in strategic locations. The focus on downtown improvement has been admirable and sustained.

JEERS: For the upheaval at Rebekah Children’s Home where three top managers were dismissed and walkouts subsequently threatened. The details aren’t clear yet, so it’s difficult to comment on beyond noting that everyone should remember the mission of the organization: to help children who are in desperate need.

JEERS: For those who waited in lines – some overnight – to buy a PlayStation 3. It’s a sad commentary on our culture when a video game device commands such attention and devotion.

CHEERS: For the men and women who are serving our county overseas this holiday season. They are in our thoughts and prayers, and hopefully a resolution will bring them home in time for next year’s Thanksgiving.
