“Dear Red Phone, I’d like to know why the Gilroy public library has the air conditioning on and most of its lights on Sunday and Monday, when it’s closed? I was just wondering.”
Red Phone: Dear conscience about energy usage,
Red Phone got in touch with head librarian Lani Yoshimura to help answer your question.
Up until recently, the lights and AC were on 24/7 due in part to some technical issues which have been fixed. Generally, on Sundays, the lights and AC are not on unless library staff needs to be in the building to complete additional work or city staff need to use the community side of the building. On Mondays, the lights and AC are on because the library holds a literacy program. Staff are also working in the mornings to unload shipments and check the automated book drop machines to make sure they aren’t jammed, according to Yoshimura. She also points out the library’s energy system is “very cost effective” and “extraordinarily good.”
