GILROY—Danger pulled off four consecutive wins to capture the champ-ionship of the 43rd Co-Rec Fourth of July Softball Tournament on July 4 at Christmas Hill Park.
Manager Edward Lujan’s charges opened the two-day event with a 12-5 victory over eventual fourth-place finisher JR’s Crew on Friday night.
Danger began the Saturday portion of the double-elimination tournament with a 7-4 trimming of eventual runner-up I Got This. Danger emerged from the winner’s bracket with an 18-11 verdict over Summer Fun, then completed the run with another win over I Got This, notching a 10-0 victory this time around.
I Got This came through the loser’s bracket with a 9-8 rally past One Hit Wonders Saturday morning to make the Final Four. Danny Pequeno powered a home run, triple and single for the Wonders. Tyler Osbourne added four singles to help power the Wonders surge.
I Got This bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, taking the decision when Eva Neibel’s two-out single plated Henry Maquinalez.
JR’s Crew also reached the Final Four with a one-run squeaker over G Family at Las Animas Veterans Park, by a close score of 11-10.
Jose Gamboa provided a home run, double and single as G Family built a 10-8 lead after six innings.
JR’s Crew survived with a three-run seventh, capped by triples from Daniel Salinas and Mark Terrill in addition to a two-out single from Mariah Mastroieni.
Vanessa Gourneau came up with four hits and scored three runs to lift Danger past Summer Fun 18-11. Mario Silva keyed the Summer Fun offense with four hits in the game.
I Got This dropped JR’s Crew 16-14, landing the Crew in fourth place. Eddie Adame homered and Greg Lucio hit two doubles as I Got This erupted for nine runs in the fifth inning to erase a 14-7 deficit. Maureen Hughes and Patricia Martinez each scored three JR’s Crew runs.
I Got This earned a spot in the finals with a 4-3 win over Summer Fun in nine innings. After I Got This posted two unearned runs in the seventh for a 3-3 tie, singles by Rick Trujillo, Lucio and Jasmine Perez led to the winning run.
Robert Green managed two singles and plated three runs as Danger eased its way past the I Got This squad 10-0 in the tournament finale to claim the championship title.
