Red Phone

“Dear Red Phone, I play tennis for recreation – and I so appreciate the city’s free facilities – but I’ve noticed some nets are hanging low. How often does the city check on these and who should I call if I see a low net? Thanks a lot.”
Red Phone: Dear John McEnroe, Red Phone beckoned the call of Maria DeLeon, the recreations department director for the City of Gilroy who encourages budding tennis players to inform the city of any issues on the court.
“If the community notices the netting on public park tennis courts are low or loose, Park and Landscape Supervisor, Bill Headley, encourages the public to call the Recreation Department office at 408-846-0460 with the name of the city park and details on which net needs upkeep,” DeLeon said.
Once Headley gets the message, city staff will be dispatched to attend to the tennis court net. So, good caller, the city would love to help. Now hit the court to work on that backhand.
And for our readers, here’s a list of city parks where you can play tennis – for free – in Gilroy. Las Animas Veterans Park, six courts; Sunrise Park, two courts and El Roble Park, two courts. You can check out Gilroy High and Christopher High as well. You might find some young guns to play against (bring extra water).
DeLeon added that on page 39 of the City of Gilroy’s Recreation Department Summer Activity Guide there’s a map that illustrates the locations of all city parks. On page 40 is a detailed description of the amenities of each city park as well. For more information on city parks, call the Recreation Department office at 408-846-0460 or visit cityofgilroy.org.
Hope this serves you well, good caller.
