Hi, I was just wondering why South County never cleans up around
the on and off ramp around Leavesley Road and on the freeway. Don’t
we have someone that represents us in South County?
“Hi, I was just wondering why South County never cleans up around the on and off ramp around Leavesley Road and on the freeway. Don’t we have someone that represents us in South County? I know you are probably going to say it is because of a lack of funding, but South County has always been ignored.”
Red Phone: Dear Neglected By The Highway, Caltrans is responsible for the area along the freeway and is currently picking up litter along the shoulders through the Santa Clara /San Benito line, said spokesman Bernie Walik. Crews, who have been out along Highway 101 five days a week picking up trash, are forming piles of garbage on a safe area along the shoulder to pick up either this week or next week, he said.
Crews have picked up more than 100 cubic yards of litter along Highway 101 within the last three months, Walik said.
While Caltrans can pick up litter along the highway, the state has no access to what lies beyond the fence, which is property of the Santa Clara Valley Water District and their responsibility to maintain, Walik said.
Weeds block visibility
“I take Highway 101 south to work each morning. I exit at Monterey Road and turn right at the stoplight. The grass and weeds are so overgrown on the left side that I have to creep out very slowly to look for traffic. Can you check in with the city or whomever and see if someone can come out and trim all that overgrown mess back? It’s unsightly and could be dangerous. Thanks!”
Red Phone: Dear Blocked By Weeds, With all the rain that we’ve had recently, weeds are popping up like wildfires. The vacant area coming off Highway 101 is one of those areas that has been affected. While the area is typically maintained by Caltrans, it would be easy to clear out, said David Stubchaer, the Gilroy operations director. He said that a crew should be able to go out there this week and trim the weeds back if the weather cooperates to make the area more visible. Hope that helps good caller.
