I’m calling to complain about loose dogs at Christmas Hill Park
and in the Glen Loma field. I ask people to please leash their dogs
and many just swear at me. It’s so rude. I have a bad back and it
hurts when I have to hold my dog as others off leash approach us.
It’s a law that dogs must be leashed. Maybe those people need to be
pounded on the head.
Keep those mutts leashed

Dear Dog Tired,
Please don’t smack anyone in the head. Violence rarely solves the problem. For your information, section 4.26 of the Gilroy Municipal Code states: An owner or person with custody over or the right to the control of any dog or dogs shall keep such dog or dogs confined to said person’s own premises within such enclosures as may be reasonably appropriate to restrain the dog from running at large. No dog shall be allowed to walk the public streets without being restrained by means of a leash capable of restraining at least four times the weight of such dog. That provision excepts assistance dogs.
The next time you see an inconsiderate dog owner letting their mutt run free, teach them a lesson. Call the non-emergency police number at 846-0350 and report them. If anyone sees a dog attacking someone, call 911 immediately.
Nice rides, who paid for them?
“I’m curious about the new paint job on the police cars. I’d like to know how much that cost and what part of the budget that came out of?”
Good caller,
Red Phone contacted Gilroy Police Sgt. Jim Gillio, who told us that there is no price increase for the Crown Victorias. The Chevrolet Tahoe Police Package Black and White scheme is an additional cost of $1,400 per unit. The money included as part of the purchase price of the vehicle which is budgeted in the fleet replacement budget.
What about that noise ordinance?
“We live near Monterey Road, and there is a paper factory near Monterey at 10th Street and Luchessa that makes the loudest buzzing and roaring noise at all hours of the night, including early morning hours between 1 and 3 a.m. The noise is so loud we can hear it with our windows closed. Funny thing is, we hardly ever hear the noise during the day. I’d like to know who we can call to come out and listen to the noise or if this factory can be cited for the obnoxious noise we hear almost every night. It amazes me more people don’t complain about it.
Well, good caller,
Red Phone knows who you can’t call at 1 a.m. All of Red Phone’s circuits will be busy (Red Phone needs its beauty sleep – it doesn’t want to be replaced by a young iPhone or Razr).
We contacted Gilroy Code Enforcement Officer Scott Barron in the Community Development Department, which provided Red Phone with the relevant noise ordinance provisions. The provisions outline noise limits based on decibel levels. For information on measuring decibel levels, contact Barron at 846-0264.
– Fixed source mechanical equipment: Maximum of 70 dBA – measured at the residential property line.
– Power tools & yard equipment (outside use): Limited to the hours of 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (same as the residential standard), with a maximum of 70 dBA – measured at the residential property line.
– Power tools & equipment (inside use): Maximum of 70 dBA – measured at the residential property line.
These first three are enforced by Code Enforcement, the following provision is enforced by the Gilroy Police Department.
n Municipal Code Section 16.31 also applies: ” … any loud, boisterous, irritating, penetrating, or unusual noise … which disturbs another in any residence … between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.” is prohibited.
