Red Phone: Safety needed on 6th Street

Hello. I was wondering why leaves aren’t being picked up rather
than just being blown into the street. Are they too tight to pay
the dump fee? It sure looks crappy especially on the east side of
Gilroy.
“Hello. I was wondering why leaves aren’t being picked up rather than just being blown into the street. Are they too tight to pay the dump fee? It sure looks crappy especially on the east side of Gilroy.”

Red Phone: Dear Leaf Them Be, It’s that time of year when the leaves are turning colors and falling from trees. Many of the trees have either recently dumped their leaves or will be shedding their coat soon.

While it’s easy to blow leaves out of your yard for someone else to worry about, the city recommends piling them up so they can be picked up.

“Leaves should not be blown into the street,” said David Stubchaer, operations supervisor. “Ideally, they should be placed in the person’s green-waste bin for pick-up and composting.”

The city will also pick up large piles of leaves that are left on the edge of the street. Rather than filling a landfill unnecessarily, Public Works is composting them. The city won’t pick up small bags because it is not efficient to send crews out, Stubchaer said.

He encouraged people to be patient as the city tries to stay on top of picking up the leaves and keeping the streets clear.

“Our crews are working every work day on leaves for both safety reasons and to prevent the leaves from clogging up the storm drains in the coming rain storms,” Stubchaer said.

People are welcome to report potential problems to 846-0444 or to schedule a pickup of leaves, he said.

Follow-up on low trees

Red Phone: A couple weeks ago, a caller had a question on trees that were too low. The person said that trucks would have to switch lanes to avoid brushing against them. Red Phone passed on your request to the city, and Todd Barrearas, the operations services supervisor, said he would have crews take a look at them. Following up this week, he said the trees on Sequoia and Laurel streets have recently been raised and the crew is currently working on the trees on Uvas and Third streets. Hope that helps good caller.
