Red Phone: Safety needed on 6th Street

“Gilroy prides itself on being an American tree city. Along with that distinction is a responsibility to maintain the trees. There are an increasing number of streets that are lined with overgrown trees. Uvas Park Drive, Laurel Street and Sequoia Drive are just a few where the trees make it impossible to stay in the proper lane, especially for larger vehicles like trucks and RVs. Trees that stretch over the roads should be maintained to a height of 12 feet so the larger vehicles can stay in their lanes.”

and …

“I frequently ride my bicycle around Gilroy while doing errands. I would say bicycle riding in Gilroy is quite challenging, from getting the motorists to see you when crossing intersections, to dodging low hanging tree limbs, especially on the north side of Mantelli Drive from Poplar Drive to Calle Del Rey. In fact most of the trees on Mantelli between Church Street all the way up to Calle del Rey could stand a trim job.”

Red Phone: Dear Blocked By Trees, There are indeed a lot of trees around Gilroy. It makes for a great bike ride or leisurely stroll around the area. But it also makes maintaining them difficult. The city has a regular schedule for trimming trees, and some are done as they are needed.

The trees on Mantelli Drive from Santa Theresa Drive to Rancho Hills Drive are scheduled to be pruned by the city’s contractor this month, said Todd Barreras, operations services supervisor. And the trees between Church Street and Hirasaki Avenue will be trimmed in January by the contractor.

The city will handle removing the low branches between Uvas Park Drive from Laurel to Third streets and on Sequoia Street, which Barreras said he would schedule in the next couple weeks. Hope that helps, good callers.
