So, what’s with the person on Laurel Street who uses his trash
receptacles to block access to curbside parking in front of his

“So, what’s with the person on Laurel Street who uses his trash receptacles to block access to curbside parking in front of his house? He has been doing this for several months now and is actually moving the containers further into the street. I can’t believe that there isn’t an ordinance against leaving trash containers on a public street. The guy who lives there deserves to be cited. This is a public nuisance and should be addressed.”
Red Phone: Dear Restricted by Recyclables, We can understand your frustration at not being able to have a place to park on garbage day. This could be a problem if the bins are too far out in the street.
“Municipal code allows the placement of garbage receptacles in the street adjacent to the curb for a limited time to facilitate the collection of garbage,” said Code Enforcement Officer Scott Barron.
Section 12.19 states, “Receptacles shall be placed in the proper area for collection the evening prior to collection and shall be removed the morning after.”
Barron said to contact Code Enforcement at 846-0264 and leave the address and description of the violation so an enforcement case can be initiated. If the problem persists, give us a ring and we’ll make sure they get moved.
Painting the town red
“I live in the apartments across the street from the Gilroy Health and Fitness center. I notice that someone keeps painting the curbs. We had a red zone before, so we could see left and right, and now all of a sudden, the curb is painted gray. There was an accident a few days ago and it’s really hard to pull out and see left and right. We heard it might have been the business that painted it because they needed extra parking. I’m wondering if that’s true. But if the city painted it gray, that’s kind of absurd because it should stay red because people can’t see when they’re leaving this parking lot. Someone’s going to get hurt really bad. Is that something the city did or what’s going on?”
Red Phone: Dear In Full Color, It’s got to be quite confusing not knowing what to expect when you pull up to the curb. But hopefully the color is there to stay now at least for part of the curb.
“I went out with the operations crew and took a look at the area, and the red curb has been reinstated,” said City Engineer Don Dey. “There is a lot of curb that was painted gray that has a very long history. The city has painted a section of red curb around that driveway for the apartments that we believe is acceptable for site visibility. There is a section that should stay red now and into the future.”
So if the curb changes color again or if you still can’t figure out what is going on there, there might indeed be a midnight marauder painting the town gray. If so, give Red Phone another call.
The luncheon was where?
In the May 8 paper, it mentioned that South County’s finest were honored at an awards luncheon. Sara Suddes neglected to put where the location of the luncheon. Was it south of the border, down in Hollister’s San Juan Oaks where the Chamber awards were held? Not in Gilroy? It’s very strange, I read the article, and it’s as if she hid where the luncheon was held.”
