Red Phone: Low branches need to be cut

I have a question about several drivers crossing Wren Avenue
between CVS and McDonald’s.
“I have a question about several drivers crossing Wren Avenue between CVS and McDonald’s. As they cross from one driveway to the other, they cross over a small area in the median that has two sets of double yellow lines. The rest of the median has the inner line broken up. Is this legal?”

Red Phone: Dear Double Vision, This area can indeed by problematic. Gilroy Police Traffic Officer Nestor Quinones, who said he himself was almost involved in an accident there, offered some advice on how to handle the intersection.

“Crossing straight across over the two sets of double yellow lines is illegal,” he said. “This is considered driving over a barrier. The rest of the median with the inner broken line is a two-way left turn lane. Drivers are allowed to enter this lane to make lawful and safe left turns.”

Police made a recommendation to the city engineering department to restripe the median and add right-turn-only signs coming out of the shopping center to make the area a little safer, Quinones said.

Update on $5 oil change

Red Phone: In Friday’s Red Phone, a caller was confused about a coupon at Gilroy Chevrolet/Cadillac offering a $5 oil change. The coupon is only valid when buying a membership. The company has begun running disclaimers with each coupon to avoid confusion. But a coupon printed in Quarterly Q-Pons distributed in November advertised the deal before the policy and member’s club were in place.

As a result, the dealership will let you use the $5 coupons without having to join the club as a way to atone for the mistake.

“I will be more than happy to honor the $5 oil change as a one-time goodwill gesture,” said David A. Zyski Sr., director of service operations. “Just have them contact me at the dealership. Again, I apologize for any misunderstanding, as we try to do our best to make sure our disclaimers are accurate.”

The phone number is 842-9301 ext. 610.

Stingy on the sauce

“Hello I wanted to complain about McDonald’s on Wren Avenue. They don’t give out barbecue sauce unless you order chicken nuggets. We ordered a chicken sandwich and a cheeseburger, and they refused to give us sauces.”

Red Phone: Dear Sauced Up, Unfortunately many restaurants, not just McDonald’s, have begun charging for extra sauces to control the overzealous use, keeping people from grabbing a handful of sauce packets to take home or take on a picnic. But these policies are nothing new.

“The policy has been in place for years,” said Steve Peat, owner of three franchises in Gilroy. “It is a very clear policy.”

So, if you can’t live without the extras, you’ll have to fork out a couple coins.

The local McDonald’s number is 847-3588, and Peat said he would love to hear from customers with questions or concerns.
