“Since construction has obviously been halted on the Highway 152 bridge project at Burchell Road. Is there any chance the K-rails can be removed until construction resumes. Ask anyone who tries to turn toward town from Burchell Road or the Elks Lodge. The vision is terrible. It’s an accident waiting to happen.”

Red Phone: Dear Blinded by the White, the three-feet high concrete barriers can make crossing the intersection dangerous, especially at night. Unfortunately, it appears the Caltrans barrier is here to stay.

“The K-rail will remain during the utility relocation process and until end of Stage 1 (Oct. 2010),” said Caltrans District 4 Public Information Officer Ben Edokpayi.

Construction for the new bridge just to the north of the existing one was supposed to begin in the middle of May, but is now scheduled to begin by the end of June or July due to PG&E and Verizon utility relocation, Edokpayi said.

“In the meantime, the speed limit on this section of Hecker Pass will be reduced to 45 mph during the construction work,” Edokpayi said. “In addition, advanced warning signs will be posted alerting motorists of the intersection ahead.”

When will the madness end

“Hi, I’m 15 years old and I go to the high school. My dad currently works for the City of Gilroy. What is the city thinking that they’re going to start handing out more pink slips? Like they didn’t fire enough people. If my dad loses his job, I’m definitely going to do something about it. He’s been working so hard. If they keep firing people, what’s the city going to do? Who’s going to help run it? My second concern is, what’s up with sports? They only print varsity results. JV and frosh/soph play too. There’s never anything about them. Just because we’re not varsity doesn’t mean we don’t want to see our names in the paper. Thank you.”

Red Phone: Dear Concerned Youth, Thanks for calling in. Its always refreshing to hear what young people like yourself have to say. It sounds like you are well voiced in what is going on. As a citizen of Gilroy, you have just as much right to voice your concerns as anyone else. More young people like yourself should get involved and learn what is going on around them.

We certainly hope your dad and all the other employees of the city will be able to keep their jobs. Unfortunately, the city faces some tough decisions ahead of it as it attempts to balance its budget.

With a $4.7 million deficit in next year’s $37.3 million budget, the city will have to find places to cut back. There have been 48 city employees who have lost there jobs this year, and 33 others could lose their jobs this month.

Negotiations with unions are still ongoing, but City Administrator Tom Haglund must hand out layoff notices by May 31 if he wants the changes to go into effect by July 1, the beginning of the next fiscal year.

As for scores, coaches or parents are welcome to submit scores and highlights for all games at all levels of play. Even Little League scores are welcomed. We have a sports score submission form at www.gilroydispatch.com/submitscores that people can fill out with their highlight. Some scores may not be printed due to space, but they will usually be included on the Web site.
