Dear Editor,

The recent, misguided U.S. Supreme Court ruling (Kelo et al v. City of New London, 04-108) allowing cities to rob Peter to pay Paul (to seize private property to sell to another private entity) shows exactly why we need conservative judges – not liberals appointed by Republicans. The liberal activists, who claim the Constitution can mean anything (in which case it means nothing), need to be removed, one way or another.

This decision puts the burden on municipalities to elect people who respect private property rights. Locally, we can act this fall. Gilroy City Councilmen Bob Dillon and Charlie Morales are up for re-election. Both of them voted to proceed with eminent domain against downtown property owners. Both deserve to be removed.

We have already seen their character deficiencies with Dillon’s desire to ban fireworks and Morales’ last minute flip-flop supporting a car tax for public transportation (which needs to be abolished). I voted for both of these men four years ago and have never made a bigger mistake.

Alan Viarengo, Gilroy
