GILROY—A little more than a year ago, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero presented 12-year-old Caley Camarillo with a miniature WBC World Title belt that made her beam from ear to ear. The belt was a symbol of Camarillo’s strength as she battled cystic fibrosis, the disease that ultimately claimed her life in June 2014.
On Saturday, the one-year anniversary of Caley’s passing, Guerrero gave the Camarillo family another gift when he donated $100,000 to the Breathe for Caley Foundation at the inaugural Caley’s Carnival fundraising event held at Uesgi Farms, 14485 Monterey Road in San Martin.
“How do I express that in words? We were floored when he made the announcement at our board meeting,” Teresa Camarillo said of Guerrero’s donation. “Everyone’s eyes just balled up in tears. We obviously weren’t expecting it.”
The donation means that the Breathe for Caley Foundation cannot only get off the ground, but it can do what it was founded to: grant wishes.
“We’ve all worked really hard to get this non-profit organization off the ground and I wanted to show my gratitude by donating to the cause,” Guerrero said. “Caley Camarillo was dear to my heart and her love and legacy will live on through her foundation.  The first event was a great success and many more will follow.”
When Caley was 4 years old, the Make-A-Wish Foundation made her dream of going to Disneyland come true, only to have her illness unexpectedly cut the trip short. The Gilroy-Morgan Hill Lion’s Club granted her a second wish and allowed the family to return before she passed away.
Caley’s experience laid the base for the foundation, which will help chronically ill children have their shot at a second wish, too. The slogan for BFC says it all: “one wish is not enough.”
Guerrero’s donation made it possible for BFC to grant its first wish on Saturday. The recipient is Maria Fajardo, a young girl also battling cystic fibrosis who received a double lung transplant. Fajardo’s wish was to attend an Oakland Raiders game with her donor’s family to get tickets to an Oakland Raider’s game and for her donor’s twin brother to receive a double-zero Raiders jersey—which was her donor’s favorite team. Together, they will receive VIP tickets and field passes to a 2015 Raiders home game.
“We would not have been able to pull that off without Robert’s donation,” Teresa said. “We can grant our first wish on the anniversary of Caley’s passing, which meant a lot to us, and Robert knows how much that means to us that we get to do this in her name.”
Guerrero was also on hand for a meet-and-greet Sunday at the carnival.
“We could just not have asked for a better guy to be on board with us,” Teresa said. “He’s a friend and he’s a (BFC) board member…(He) never forgot my daughter. Robert means so much to our family.”
