SALINAS – Gilroy High’s girls volleyball team continues to make progress, but it hasn’t resulted in wins just yet.
The Mustangs lost at Salinas in four sets Tuesday: 24-26, 23-25, 25-23, 27-29.
While Gilroy is currently in the middle of the pack in the Tri-County Athletic League standings at 1-2 (5-10 overall), Salinas sits in first at 3-0, 8-2 overall.
“Salinas played a hard-fought game, but I’m not sure they expected what they got from the Gilroy girls,” Mustangs coach Sue Grogan said. “I’m not sure I expected what the girls gave [Tuesday].
” … (The) girls played their hearts out.”
Poor serving limited how far Gilroy could go in trying to pull off the upset. The team had 16 service errors.
The Mustangs did attack the net well, though, with strong play out of setters Erin O’Riley (16 assists) and Lindsay Meazell (13 assists).
Avrielle Walker led the Mustangs with 10 digs and 12 kills, while putting away a strong 48 percent of her strikes. Lindsey Foster had three kills and three blocks, Sarah UnaDia contributed three blocks and Jasmine Perez “was a digging machine,” according to Grogan, compiling 25 scoops.
The Mustangs will be back on the court Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Alisal.
