Gilroy – Four people were injured, two of them seriously, in a two-car collision in San Martin Wednesday evening.

Rivers Leoncio Alvarez, 43, and Rosa M. Bizarro, 47, both of Gilroy, were driving a 2000 Kia northbound on Columbet Avenue approaching the intersection of San Martin about 6:10pm, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Headed toward the same intersection on San Martin Avenue driving eastbound in a 2004 Honda were Michael S. Casab, 54, and a 48-year-old female passenger, both of San Martin.

As Casab, who did not have a stop sign, entered the intersection going 40 miles per hour, Alvarez – who was also going 40 mph, failed to stop for his stop sign, according to the CHP. The front of Casab’s Honda struck the side of the Kia, pushing it off the road, where it struck a flower bed and fence around a nearby home. The Kia came to rest in the residence’s front yard at the northeast corner of the intersection.

The Honda skidded to the left side of the roadway and came to rest in the dirt shoulder of Columbet Avenue.

Alvarez suffered internal injuries, abrasions and bruises and was airlifted with Casab’s passenger, who suffered a fractured right clavicle and internal injuries, to Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto. Both were admitted. Bizarro was transported to Regional Medical Center in San Jose and was admitted with a fractured left thumb, internal injuries, and abrasions. Casab transported himself to Stanford and was treated and released, according to the CHP.
