Gilroy – At the NCAA wrestling Championships Thursday in St. Louis, Gilroy native and Cal State Bakersfield senior Matt Sanchez won his first round match, but fell in the second round of the 133-pound bracket.

The tenth-seeded Sanchez opened the day with a 12-5 win over Ohio State’s T.J. Enright. In that match, Sanchez took a 5-2 lead in the second period with a takedown. In the final period, Sanchez sealed the victory with three takedowns.

In the second round, Sanchez closed the gap on seventh-seeded Nathan Morgan late in the match, but it wasn’t enough and Morgan took the 7-5 decision.

The loss put Sanchez into the 133-pound consolation bracket, where next he will battle Rider’s Tim Harner, who came into the tournament unseeded and lost his first round match.

Although it will be an uphill battle, Sanchez could still finish as high as third place if he wins the rest of his matches.
