Sandra Aguayo didn’t burst onto the GHS scene. In fact, it would have been so easy for her to just slip through the cracks.
When she was in the seventh grade, Aguayo’s father Bernardo died of cancer.
“I was really close to my dad so it was tough on me for a few years,” Aguayo said. “But my brothers were really supportive, and it made me become closer with my mom.”
It may have taken her a few years, but Aguayo rebounded well. In her sophomore and junior years, Aguayo went to summer school to make up classes she did not complete. On Friday, the 17-year-old will graduate with a 3.2 grade point average and will attend the University of San Francisco this fall where she will study chemistry.
“I want to be a pharmacist because I want to help people who are going through what my dad went through,” Aguayo said.
Aguayo played field hockey at Gilroy High for three years and was a team captain this year. Aguayo has also worked as a tutor for CAUSA (Community Alliance for Upgrading Student Access) – a non-profit program serving at-risk, low-income and limited English speaking students.
