I’ve been the sports editor here at the Dispatch for two weeks now, so it’s probably time I said hello.
This is my first time living in the great state of California and I must say that so far, so good.
I’ve previously worked as a sports writer for the Yuma Sun in Yuma, Ariz. and did my time designing sports sections in Des Moines, Iowa.
Now I’m here in Gilroy, ready to take on this new challenge.
People often ask me how I got started in this industry and what made me want to be a journalist. It’s quite simple. I love sports and I played soccer and was a cheerleader, but that is about the extent of my athletic career. I quickly learned I was limited in my athletic abilities, but what I could do was write.
Alas, a sports writer was born.
It’s already been an exciting couple weeks for me here. In addition to moving to a brand new city, I had the pleasure of watching the Gilroy softball team win a Central Coast Section Division II championship the first Saturday I was here.
I interviewed our Athletes of the Year at Gilroy, Christopher and Sobrato high schools and been able to write compelling stories from meeting them.
To be honest, it bums me out that I arrived at the end of prep season. At the same time, it gives me a lot to look forward to when athletics start again in the fall.
Prep sports are just the tip of the iceberg here. I’ve already received numerous tips about people in the South Valley doing incredible things.
It’s safe to say that sports are alive and well in our area.
I am honored to be your new sports editor and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
One of my main goals is to make our stories more interactive. I plan on shooting video at games, taking photos while on assignment and connecting with you – our readers – through social media
I’m always happy to talk with our readers so feel free to call, email or tweet me (@DispatchERed) with any ideas, comments or concerns you have — or if you just want to talk sports.
