Gilroy – The ones who drive the yellow buses filled with noisy kids to and from school received accolades Tuesday, thanks to an Assembly bill specifically established to honor California school bus drivers.

The resolution, passed in 2002, declares that every fourth Tuesday in April all school bus drivers are to be recognized for their continued service to children throughout the state. In Gilroy, the 34 bus drivers who comprise Gilroy Unified School District’s transportation unit, munched on barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers to celebrate their commitment.

This was the first year the group organized a gathering for the drivers. The men and women also wore yellow and black to show their solidarity.

District Transportation Supervisor Darren Salo, a bus driver since 1983, said acknowledging the individuals who safely transport students five days a week, is important.

“Would you put your child in a stranger’s vehicle and let the (stranger) drive off?” he asked. “But thousands of people do that everyday with the bus drivers.”
