The school board approved a tentative draft calendar for the 2010-11 school year at Thursday evening’s board meeting. The calendar is subject to change pending ongoing negotiations between the school district and the teachers union, Superintendent Deborah Flores said. With only a week left of the current school year, Flores said she expected to finalize the calendar sometime this summer.

The draft calendar includes 179 student instruction days, with the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 18 and the last on Friday, June 3. The school year usually runs for 180 days but the state gave school districts the option to shorten the school year by up to five days to save money. The length of the school year is one of the items subject to negotiation, and although the school district has proposed cutting only one student instruction day, that number could change, Flores said.

Another notable break from the current year’s calendar is that spring break will be taken during the first full week of April and will not coincide with the Easter holiday, which falls on April 24 in 2011.
