Military

Lt. Col. Lane J. Lance

Lt. Col. Lance J. Lance is currently serving in the U.S. Army in Baghdad.

Lance is working with the Iraqi police to help them with responsibilities and teach them counter insurgency strategies to run their government on their own.

Before arriving in Baghdad, Lance spent three years at the American Embassy in Egypt and served as Deputy Political Advisor to the Chief Staff of the Army in the Pentagon office.

Now 50 years old, Lance was raised in Gilroy and graduated from Gilroy High School.

His parents Lynn and Jean Lance and brothers Jonathan, Shawn and Scott all live in Gilroy. His sister Carol lives in Pacific Grove and two sisters, Laura and Sally, live in Utah. His wife Debbie and their eight children live in Virginia and the surrounding area.

Benjamin R. Morales

Army Pfc. Benjamin R. Morales has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky. During the nine-week training period, he received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid and Army history, traditions and core values.

He is the grandson of Celia Altamirano of Gilroy and son of Carmen Morales of Hollister. He is a 2004 graduate of Gilroy High School.

Nathan A. Vasquez

Private Nathan Andrew Vasquez graduated from the United States Marine Corps Depot (MCRD), Second Recruit Training Battalion, Hotel Company Platoon #2046 in San Diego on Feb. 4, 2005.

Private Vasquez is the son of proud parents Juan Jr. and Linda S. Vasquez and the brother of Anthony Vasquez and Elyssa Vasquez, grandson of Marin V. Salinas and the late Maria T. Salinas of Hollister and Jim and Maria Sherro of Warrenton, Va.

Private Vasquez is a graduate of San Benito High School, class of 2002.

He attended Cabrillo College and was employed with San Benito Heating & Air Conditioning prior to enlisting with the Marine Cops.

He is currently stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, where he is attending infantry school, majoring in Security Forces (UV).

Evan J. Arnold

Navy Fireman Evan J. Arnold, son of Susan M. Arnold of Garden Grove, Calif. and Johnnie J. Arnold Jr. of Morgan Hill, and his fellow shipmates recently completed a series of sea trials while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.

The sea trials ensured Kitty Hawk can maneuver and maintain high speeds.

The ship also tested many of it’s self-defense systems. Arnold is a 2002 graduate of Marina High School of Huntington Beach, Calif. and joined the Navy in November 2004.

Camilo J. De La Cueva, Joel E. Diehl

Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Camilo J. De La Cueva, son of Jenny P. and Camilo De La Cueva of Gilroy, and Marine Corps Sgt. Joel E. Diehl, son of Debbie A. Diehl of Morgan Hill and Robert E. Diehl of Lower Lake, Calif., and more than 2,100 marines and sailors assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, recently joined Iraqi Security Forces to provide security for elections in Najaf, Iraq.

De La Cueva’s unit’s primary mission was to sweep the city looking for suspicious activity and deter insurgents trying to disrupt voting.

De La Cueva joined the Marine Corps in November 1992. Diehl is a 1996 graduate of Middletown High School of Middletown, Calif. and joined the Marine Corps in April 1998.

Christina D. Marsh

Navy Airman Christina D. Marsh, daughter of Skip W. and stepdaughter of Caryn G. Marsh of Morgan Hill, was recently promoted to her current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Marsh received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. Marsh is a 2003 graduate of Central High School of Morgan Hill.

Jared K. Olsen

Navy Seaman Apprentice Jared K. Olsen, son of Sharon A. and Alan Olsen of Gilroy, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Engagements

Tognetti-Cuthbert

Christine Tognetti of Gilroy and Mark Cuthbert of Chicago are engaged to be married. Christine is a 1999 graduate of Gilroy High School and a 2003 graduate from California State University, Chico with a journalism degree. Mark is a 2002 graduate of the University of Chicago.

The couple, who were engaged on Valentine’s Day, currently reside in Clarksville, Tenn, where they will live for the next two years. Christine is a staff reporter for the Kentucky New Era and Mark is a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

They will be married in Monterey in the fall of 2006 when Mark returns from Iraq. Christine is the daughter of Pam and John Tognetti of Gilroy and Mark is the son of Jean Cuthbert and the late Mark Cuthbert of Bourbonnais, Ill.

Honors

Alethea Prewett

Alethea Prewett of Gilroy is a new junior member of the American Angus Association, announced John Crouch, executive vice president of the national organization with headquarters in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Junior members of the association are eligible to register cattle in the American Angus Association, participate in programs conducted by the National Junior Angus Association and take part in association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events.

The American Angus Association is the largest beef registry association in the world, with more than 34,000 active adult and junior members.

Alexa Duda

Alexa Duda of Gilroy is listed on the 2005 fall semester dean’s list at the University of Portland, maintaining a 3.5 grade point average. Duda is a freshman majoring in secondary education.

Maureen McGinty

Maureen McGinty of Gilroy is listed on the 2005 fall semester dean’s list at the University of Portland, maintaining a 3.5 grade point average. McGinty is a junior majoring in political science.
