GILROY – The 12-year-old Gilroy Little League All-Stars began their tear in the District 39 Tournament last week with only one tight loss sandwiched in between a pair of blow-out victories.
The garlic diamondmen – who will take on Capitola Soquel tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Pinto Lake Park in Watsonville – opened with an 11-0 win over Watsonville National, but then lost their second game by a slim 9-6 margin to Watsonville American. In the double-elimination format, Gilroy returned to form – stomping San Juan Aromas, 16-0.
In game-one vs. National, pitcher Jake Maslanka tossed three shutout innings and struck out five to notch the win. First baseman Mitchell Muro (3-for-4) clubbed away for Gilroy as well as teammates Travis Glueck, Maslanka and Steven Martinez all finishing up 2-for-3 from the plate.
In game-two vs. American, home runs by Clayton Eslick and David Garcia were not quite enough to off set three errors in the second and third innings.
In game-three vs. San Juan, the pitching combination of Filemond Bobadilla, Muro, Samuel May and Maslanka combined for a four-inning, one-hit shutout. A dinger off the bat of May and a grand slam from David Garcia highlighted the offense along with 2-for-3 performances via Kyle Hypes and David Garcia.
