MORGAN HILL – No one has been arrested in a shooting incident late Sunday night that appears to be the result of an argument between several groups of people.

Shots were fired at about 11:30 p.m. on Spring Avenue near Barnell Avenue in a residential area, but there were no injuries, according to police reports.

“We have no evidence at this time that this was in any way related to a gang or gangs,” Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Troy Hoefling said Monday. “And we have nothing to substantiate the claim that this was attempted murder.”

A press release issued by MHPD Monday morning initially characterized the event as an attempted murder.

According to police information, officers were dispatched to a reported physical fight. Upon arrival at 16710 Barnell Ave., one officer heard shots being fired in the area. Other officers attempted to gather information from potential witnesses.

The initial investigation led police to believe that two groups of suspects were involved in a physical fight, for reasons unknown at this time. During the fight, a third group became involved and allegedly fired pistols at an occupied vehicle.

“We have impounded a vehicle that has a bullet hole in it,” Hoefling said. “However, the people involved in the initial confrontation were uncooperative.”

The investigation is ongoing, he said.
