I realize that taking these tips from the black-and-white of the newspaper and transforming them into real swings on the range can be difficult. I often think about that when I am trying to convey a motion to my students. The simplest way to teach the swing is to illustrate the positions you should be in at the top and finish of the swing, and what happens in between.

The first step is we want our hands over our right shoulder at the top of our backswing (for lefties, the opposite, throughout). This is the position we want to be in when we are finished with our backswing. Keep your left arm as straight as possible and your right arm can be bent with your elbow pointing down to the ground.

Closing the door is the action that your swing takes through impact. The swing works like a door, it opens on the way back and you want to close it through to impact. After impact, we want to now finish with our hands over our left shoulder. So, in proper order it goes like this. Hands over the right shoulder at the top, close the door through impact and then finish with your hands over your left shoulder.

If you practice this simple idea you will have a solid swing that is easy to repeat.
