A local volunteer at Si, Se Puede! Learning Center at 500 IOOF Ave. – a supplemental after-school program for children in the kindergarten through fifth grades – was recently nominated by the program to receive recognition from Khol’s Cares, a community outreach program initiated by Khol’s stores.
Gizsel Urias Duran, a seventh-grader at South Valley Middle School who lives in low-income apartments in Gilroy, was chosen from the pool of recipients to receive the honor.
Urias received a certificate along with a $50 gift card to Khol’s.
“She was really excited, as you can imagine,” said longtime Si, Se Puede! volunteer Thom Guzowski.
Being a seventh-grader and getting the chance to buy brand new clothes is pretty awesome, he said, “especially when money is tight.”
