Red Phone

Dear Read Phone, “On Solis Drive about three weeks ago they jackhammered a huge hole to fix a leaking pipe and they just covered it with a bunch of rocks. Now the rocks are ending up in the street and they haven’t repaired it. Three weeks have gone by and I want to know what’s up.”
Red Phone: Dear reader, Red Phone inquired with Public Information Officer Joe Kline with the City of Gilroy, who was able to get in touch with Water Department Supervisor Dan Aldridge. Here is his response. We hope you find this helpful.
“This is a leak repair that the water dept has repaired. We put base rock up to street grade to allow more exposure for sunshine to dry the surrounding soil as it was extremely saturated. We want to give it time to dry out so there is less chance of the street pavement patch failing. This is a low traffic street. We have gone out at residents’ request to clean up the rocks and add more base rock. I am monitoring it. We plan to pave next week.”

Dear Read Phone, “I’m responding to the sign in the street for playing children. I’d like to give my five cents to this. Parents who tell their children they can play in the street by putting up a sign, in my opinion, are completely inaccurate. They should teach their children not to play in the street regardless. It’s like you tell a child or any person they have the right of way to cross a street in the crosswalk without even looking. You have to teach your children that when they cross the street, they should look both directions to verify that no cars are coming. These days so many people are distracted. So who knows if you cross the street or just play in the street, it’s very easy for a driver to get distracted and they don’t see you. Even if they’re wrong, it doesn’t do much good if you get run over. Parents should teach their children to not play in the street, regardless if there is a sign or not. That’s my opinion. Thanks.”
Red Phone: OK, but it is a cul-de-sac which is often a gathering place for children. While it’s important for children to learn safety awareness, it’s also important for them to play outside together and shooting hoops or shooting a basketball around in a cul-de-sac shouldn’t be a no-no. That’s Red Phone’s opinion.
