Dear Editor,

California is one step closer to redefining the institution of marriage, thanks to our state Assembly’s passage of AB 849 Tuesday. In fact, voters from Gilroy, Hollister, Watsonville, and Salinas can personally “thank” Assembly Member Simon Salinas for being the deciding vote in favor of same-sex marriage.

Assembly Member Salinas last week claimed to personally believe that marriage is between between a man and a woman. He also recognized that to fully represent the voters in his district, he would have to vote no on the same-sex marriage bill. He led people to believe that he would again, abstain from voting for, or against the measure. He ultimately decided to negate and ignore the voice of his constituents and voted to change the definition of marriage to read between “two persons,” instead of how history and cultures have always accepted it, between “a man and a woman”.

The governor now is faced with whether to veto, or allow AB 849 into law. The governor needs to hear from the voters.

The people will again get a chance to make their voice heard regarding the institution of marriage when an amendment to the state constitution comes before the voters next year.

We all need to remember that America was founded on the principle so clearly stated by Abraham Lincoln, “… of the people, by the people, for the people”.
