CLOVIS – The Gilroy Hawks Wrestling Club was in full force at the Kids State Championship on May 2-4 at Clovis East High School – finishing with two champions and six placers.
“It was awesome,” Hawks’ head coach Armando Gonzalez said. “We had 11 going and more than half placed. We even left three placers home so we could have easily had nine out of 13.”
In the 12-14 age group, Martin Gonzalez won the 75-pound title and Hunter Collins claimed the 140-pound crown with Rudy Maldonada, at 95 pounds, and Andres Barragan, at 180 pounds, both finishing second. In addition, Tim Ibanez placed third at 85 pounds.
In the 10-11 age group, Vincent Aboytes placed fourth at 85 pounds.
Other Hawks who competed in the Kids State were: Rodney Blajadia, Benjamin Toricer, Jeremy Petrobono, Ethan Ogle, and Dave Sukamoto.
Coach Gonzalez took over the Gilroy Hawks 11 years ago. The club was originally started by Charlie Morales in 1968. The team practices every Tuesday and Thursday at the Gilroy High wrestling room beginning at 5 p.m.
