Firefighters quickly contained this brush fire near the railroad

A small brush fire broke out about 12 p.m. Wednesday behind the Gilroy Dispatch on Monterey Road near the railroad tracks. There were reports of an explosion in the area, and police were worried it might spread to the nearby commercial vehicle filling area that has canisters of gasoline.

A mattress and other items belonging to a homeless person were charred near a wire fence, but firefighters were able to put out the blaze quickly and no other damage occurred.
