Heads up defensive plays late in the game and a clutch two-RBI double lifted the Christopher High softball team to a 4-3 victory over North Monterey County in 11 innings on Tuesday.

“There were some phenomenal plays in the extra innings,” said CHS manager Larry Nabzeska whose Cougars move to 2-1 in Monterey Bay League play, rebounding from a 4-2 loss to Monterey on Monday.

A 1-1 tie carried into the ninth inning, where tiebreaker rules are applied – each team begins their half of the inning with a runner on second base.

Kayla Medrano, who had three hits in the contest, belted the two-RBI double to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead, a cushion Nabzeska thought would be enough.

“I figured, it’s over,” he said.

However, Janell Godfrey’s assessment of the situation differed and the catcher delivered a two-run home run to knot matters once again.

An on-your-toes play on defense from Mariza Rodriguez in the bottom of the 10th preserved the tie and the Cougars regained the lead in the top of the 11th on a Mariah Martinez RBI fielder’s choice ground out.

The Cougars weren’t out of the woods just yet.

The Condors loaded the bases with one out before pitcher Aly Olvera ended things, snagging a line-drive comebacker to kick start a double play.

Christopher hosts Pajaro Valley on Thursday and Harbor (non-league) on Friday. Both games are slated for 4 p.m. starts.
