Nine runs through the first three innings by host Monterey High had the Christopher High softball team in an upward climb throughout the teams’ Monterey Bay League matchup in a Toreadors’ 9-2 victory Tuesday night.
“We didn’t give this one away,” CHS manager Larry Nabzeska said. “They beat us pretty soundly. They hit the ball very well.”
After the Cougars (11-4-1 overall, 5-3 MBL) posted the game’s first run in the top of the first, the Toreadors (13-3, 7-0) unloaded a five-spot in their half of the inning.
CHS stayed close with another tally in the second but surrendered three runs in the bottom of the frame and another in the third.
Kristen Dennis went 2-for-3, while Janae Estrada, Kaslin Ettema, Mariza Rodriguez and Kayla Medrano had one hit apiece. Aly Overa and Johnna Blank recorded one RBI each.
The Cougars are currently in third place in the MBL, one game back of Seaside, which stole a 4-2 decision with three runs in the bottom of the six when the two squads met April 5. The top two finishers in league receive an automatic bid to the section playoffs. CHS has four league tilts remaining, including a May 3 date with the Spartans.
