Hollister – After its disappointing 8-2 loss against North Salinas on Wednesday, the Gilroy High softball team was looking to rebound with a win on the road against Hollister.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs (1-7 TCAL), they ran into a red-hot Haybaler squad led by Dani Hernandez, who was coming off a no-hit performance on the mound against Salinas.
Gilroy played better than it had on Wednesday, but Hollister prevailed on Friday with a 2-0 win.
“The difference in the game today was that they executed and we didn’t,” said Mustangs coach Julie Berggren. “They were able to put runners in scoring position and we couldn’t.”
Gilroy had a couple of scoring opportunities against Hollister. In the fourth, Erin Magill coaxed a walk, then advanced to second two batters later on a sacrifice bunt. With two down, the Mustangs were looking to bring the sophomore home and tie the score.
But Hernandez, who threw a complete game two-hitter, got a strikeout to retire the side and end the threat.
“We definitely played better than we did on Wednesday,” Berggren said. “We were more focused. I’m not happy about the loss but I’m happy with the effort.”
