Fresh off of a tournament championship at the Steinbeck Classic, the Gilroy High softball team knocked Salinas from the ranks of the league’s unbeaten, defeating the Cowboys 3-0 on the road on Tuesday.
A scoreless game until the fourth, the Mustangs broke through to grab a 1-0 advantage via an RBI single from Sarah Lorraine Lira, driving in Casey Lester, who led off the inning with a triple.
Gilroy tacked on two more tallies in the sixth. Melanie Morelos legged out a two-run, inside-the-park home run.
Lira, meanwhile, kept the Cowboys (10-3, 4-1 Tri-County Athletic League) at bay, sticking out eight while allowing just two hits in seven innings.
The Mustangs (15-2, 4-1 TCAL) host non-league Valley Christian (10-4, 7-1 West Catholic Athletic League) on Thursday. Game time is 4 p.m.
