A slow start didn’t do much to throw off the Gilroy Little League Junior All-Stars (13 and 14 year olds) in Game 1 of the Western Regional, as the locals dismantled Arizona 15-0 on Thursday night in Arizona.
Arizona kept Gilroy (representing Northern California in the 11-team tournament) off the board in the first inning. Gilroy pushed across one run in the second and used its small ball approach to plate five runs in the third. Gilroy tacked onto its sizeable advantage and used a big sixth inning, in which it sent 12 batters to the dish, to finish out the victory.
Defense and pitching complimented the offense. Arizona managed just two hits and two walks.
The All-Stars, which is aiming for a berth into the Little League World Series, continue play at regionals tonight against Utah. Pool play runs through the weekend.
